Sunrise Seminar IV: Immune and Biologic Factors that Impact Gynecologic Cancer Outcomes

Monday, March 30, 2015: 6:30 AM-7:30 AM
Continental Ballroom (Hilton Chicago)
Description: The immune system protects us from cancer and influences post-operative recovery. In woman undergoing cancer surgery, with potential release of malignant cells throughout her body, defenses against metastasis are suppressed at a time when she needs them most. Surgical stress, pre-operative immune status, and anesthetic techniques all contribute to patient outcomes affecting post-operative recovery and even cancer recurrence. Components of the immune system continually rebalance their contributions either speeding or impeding healing, and increasing or decreasing the likelihood of metastatic disease. This raises the question whether certain anesthetic techniques and other immunomodulation might improve recovery and survival. Recent evidence suggests these factors matter.
